The Plates of the Whole Earth Catalog:

The Whole Earth Catalog was a countercultural publication founded in 1968 by Stewart Brand. It was a compendium of resources and tools for self-sufficiency, alternative living, and personal empowerment. The catalog featured articles, reviews, and advertisements for books, tools, and other products that could aid individuals in pursuing a more sustainable and self-reliant lifestyle.
The Whole Earth Catalog inspired many people in the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s, including Steve Jobs, who famously described it as "Google in paperback form." The catalog's focus on DIY culture, sustainability, and community-building helped to shape the ethos of the environmental movement and the development of the internet. Its influence can still be seen in various aspects of modern culture, including the Maker movement and the ongoing interest in sustainable living.

Through exercises in disassembling and reassembling the Whole Earth Catalog, my work aimed to delve deeper into the project of circular knowledge, and how it could inform our understanding of sustainable development goals. The course also featured contributions from scholars with diverse perspectives on encyclopedism, handbooks, and tools. Ultimately, the course aimed to offer a unique and multifaceted exploration of the role of encyclopedism in shaping our understanding of scientific knowledge and its relationship to society.
